** Track Event. Time Trials. FunRuns. Race School **
SCCA has a bit of a history launching new ideas at NCM Motorsports Park, most know that Time Trials Nationals was born here in 2017 (and continues to live here), not as many may know that the concept test for Track Night in America also happened here in 2014. Now, as the Club looks to expand offerings the plan is to bring two new products to NCM AND, do it on the same weekend, May 6 and 7.
The first is an experience-based autocross concept, somewhat jokingly thought of a “autocross for people who hate autocross,” according to SCCA’s Sr. Director of Experiential Programs Heyward Wagner. “SCCA is pretty good at competition-based autocross, but we really don’t have a experiential autocross brand, a Track Night in America for Autocross. Which is exactly the idea here. Keep it simple, keep it fun. No work assignments, take as many runs as you want, bring some friends and have a good time.”
If that were not enough, SCCA will also be piloting their new Race School. The school is intended to help anyone who wants to get into wheel-to-wheel racing, be it sprint or endurance racing, get started on their racing journey. “It is a step toward getting a license,” acknowledged Program Lead, Jon Krolewicz, “but it is much more focused on taking the coaching techniques developed through Track Night and using them to bring people to up to speed as a racer.”
If that sounds like a lot for one weekend, it’s actually only the half of it. SCCA will also be hosting a Time Trials and a Track event this weekend, putting cars on course in competition and just for lapping fun. This, Wagner pointed out, “is all part of a big idea for SCCA, doing all the things at the same place, on the same weekend,” which is another new thing SCCA is working on here at NCM. Wagner Added, “It just feels right to do it here, at NCM.”
